Case Study - Windrush Primary School, Woolwich

This project involved the removal of the existing twin wall header system and the installation of a new twin wall four hour fire rated system to serve two MHS Ultragas condensing boilers.

Airtherm had to undertake a CCTV survey to establish to condition of the existing chimney and to ensure the new liner would pass down the stack without any obstruction.

The existing 24m high brick built chimney is lined throughout with our single wall fully welded product suitable for the application. Our experience team of fitting engineers used a chain block to lower the sections down the stack until reaching the base, completed using a top stub termination cowl and flashing plate.

Airtherm Engineering's reputation for providing a quick response to clients needs was highlighted by a recent flue installation at student accommodation in Manressa Street (off Kings Road), Chelsea, London.

The client contacted our office to request an engineer to attend site, survey and provide a price the same day. After our initial survey we offered our cost proposal for consideration, after which an order was issued but only on the provision that we could install both flues within 48 hours due to exceptional time constraints.

The product required was in stock and the installation was completed within the 48 hour deadline, much to the delight of our client.

Case Study - All Saints Primary School, Maidenhead

During September 2012, Airtherm Engineering Limited completed a flue installation at All Saints Primary School, Maidenhead, ready for the return of pupils from the summer shut-down.

The Masterflue system installed incorporated a draft stabiliser, as recommended within the manufactures operating and maintenance literature for balancing purposes.

Due to the close proximity of a kitchen ventilation intake (AHU) - approx. 5m distance - the flue system couldn't simply terminate above the flat roof as standard. Instead, our solution was to incorporate an offset towards the taller structure with the twin wall flue system fixed and secured to the existing brick stack.

Case Study - Raich Leisure Centre, Sunderland

During December 2012, Airtherm Engineering worked closely with the contractor at Raich Leisure Centre in Sunderland to complete the installation of a Hamworthy Masterflue system.

The flue system installed comprised of a 3m horizontal run and a 7m vertical, incorporating the necessary drains to allow any unwanted condense to evacuate the system.

Our engineers had been given only ten days to arrange both a site meeting and install the complete flue system to meet our clients program. Not only did we fulfil our obligation but Airtherm were a massive 15% cheaper than the boiler manufacture’s own preferred company (on a ‘like for like basis and using the exact same Masterflue( MF) product range).

Case Study - Mansion Studios, Nottingham

Chimney and flue specialist Airtherm Engineering Limited was appointed, in August 2012, as the preferred flue installer at a new Mansion Studios refurbishment in the City Centre of Nottingham.

Bowman House is an existing 1970’s, 4-storey office building which has been converted into 140 one-bed studios for students. The building is now known as Mansion Studios.

The brief was to design, supply and install two twin wall stainless steel insulated flue systems, each serving high efficiency heatmaster boilers and a chp unit, all located in the basement of the building.

The boiler house was extremely congested and gave our installation team a challenging time, but due to their experience we overcame the obstacle's and completed on-time.

Case Study - Grange Farm Primary School, Coventry

Airtherm Engineering Limited has recently completed a flue dilution installation, working closely with the consultant and contractor at Grange Farm Primary School, Coventry.

The flue system selected for the project needed to be aesthetically pleasing, discreet and blend in with the building features, so a dilution system was chosen over a traditional system, which the client was in total agreement.

Airtherm provided design calculations for the project using the latest iCalc sizing package, along with compressive technical submission and Auto Cad drawings for approval prior to manufacture and ordering of the equipment.

The flue system installed comprised of a 300mm diameter fully welded dilution header, flatk Woods bifurcated epoxy coated fan, stainless steel silencers, volume control regulators and supply and discharge louvres, situated 2m from ground level to comply with Clean Air Act Memorandum.

Considerations
Airtherm can offer a fan dilution system to suit many appliances, from modern high efficiency condensing to gas blown and atmospheric boilers, however the principal of diluting the products of combustion is to reduce the CO² content at the discharge to below 1%, CO 50ppm & NOx 5ppm (BS6644 / IGEUP/10) in line with current legislation.

There are many design considerations that must be achieved, for instance, the correct sizing of the fan unit, dilution header, inlet and discharge plenum boxes, the location to adjacent buildings, openable windows, fresh air vent pipes and final discharge height. These can be found from the Clean Air Act memorandum, IGEUP/10 or BS6644, along with other certain provisions with respect to the final discharge height which is calculated based on the total kw input load of the plant.

Good Practice
There are two methods that can be considered when designing the dilution system -

• Air is directly taken from the outside.
• Fresh air is taken from within the plant area.

We offer a design, supply and installation service for flue dilution systems, and can offer a tailored-made package to site conditions and customer requirements.

Airtherm Engineering has completed another installation using Nova product serving two high efficiency wall hung Mikrofil Ethos 90kw condensing boilers at St Gregory's RC School in Birmingham.

Nova is a new breed of chimney system that offers a single solution for virtually all of today's combustion requirements. Nova is a true multi-fuel / multi-application product, whether being used to serve a solid fuel stove, vent the latest high efficiency condensing appliances or Biomass wood chip / pellet stove, Nova is the product of choice. With a diameter range covering thirteen sizes, Nova covers domestic and commercial applications. Manufactured from a 316L inner liner, 25mm high density insulated annulus and a grade 304 outer case, Nova is built to last. Unlike some of our competitors, Nova is designed with a rapid fit multi-barbed twist lock jointing system.

This not only offers a fast and simplistic installation method but also a durable and strong joint allowing a free-standing height of up to 3.0 metres to be support above the last support.

When used on appliances which product high levels of condensation, such as highly efficient condensing appliances, Nova can be retrofitted with a seal to allow both positive pressure and condensate resistance up to 200Pa, based on a maximum flue gas temperature of 200°C. Nova is available in thirteen sizes, ranging from 100mm to 600mm internal diameter.

• Suitable for fully condensing applications
• Fully welded construction
• High level insulation
• High thermal resistance
• High speed twist lock jointing system to aid installation
• Without seals the product is suitable for multi fuel applications up to 450°C

Diameters: 100mm - 600mm

Construction: Twin Wall Insulated
Material: 316L stainless steel liner and 304 stainless steel outer case

Airtherm have recently designed, supplied and installed a complete twin wall stainless steel flue system serving each MHS Adinox ADI LT 200 modulating boiler at Oakham Primary School in Dudley in the West Midlands.

This installation of a 10m, 3nr MHS Adinox ADI LT 200 flue for a gas condensing boiler system comprised of a twin wall insulated stainless steel pre-fabricated exhaust system, manufactured from a 0.6mm grade 316L inner liner and a 0.4mm grade 304L outer case with the 37.5mm void packed of 128kg/m3 high density insulation.

The system used gives a positive pressure resistance of up to 2KPa and a continuous high temperature capability of up to 760°C independently tested to BS 476: Part 24 for 4 hours.

All of the products used are approved and CE marked to EN 1856-1 and manufactured under a quality assurance scheme, administered by British Standards in accordance with BS EN 9001: 2008.
