Case Study - Colegrave School, Newham, London

Airtherm Engineering's track record of successful and efficient projects was demonstrated by the recent installation of our 'Can-iVent' island kitchen canopy system at Colegrave Primary School in Newham, London.

The project involved the successful liaising between Fowler Martin, AC Preou Limited and Newham Council (consultant, contractor and client, respectively).

Airtherm Engineering Limited liaised with both the consultant and the contractor at all times, attending site meetings, providing comprehensive technical submission, including calculations and drawings for approval prior to manufacture of the equipment.

Project Details
Consultant: Fowler Martin
Client: AC Preou Ltd
Sector: Education
Products: Can-iVent System
Equipment: Cooking Equipment
Application: Input & Extract System

Product Range
Our product range extends from simple condense canopies, extract only, island or wall mounted canopies, through to our air injection island systems allowing both input and extract. If required, the input air can be pre-heated for additional internal staff comfort during the cold winter months. All products can be configured to suit each individual application.

Manufacture

All canopies are manufactured from 304 (En 1.4301) or 316 (En 1.4401) stainless steel where specified and are suitably braced to prevent product distortion. All joints are welded and polished.

Our Canopies are cut, punched and folded into sub sections and factory assembled by means of computer controlled seam welds, and non-visible mechanical fixings. Systems are manufactured to the strict guidelines of DW/172, British Standards and conform to HSE for commercial kitchen ventilation. Wall mounted or island canopies can be manufactured to meet almost any dimension but typically 1000mm to 8000mm long. The system ductwork is manufactured and installed to incorporate cleaning and maintenance access doors to fully comply with DW/144 & TR/19 standards.

Canopy Lighting
The units are designed and manufactured to deal with a wide ranging and varied commercial application and can deal with humidity, condense rich, as well as hot and greasy environments.

These units are normally recessed into the canopy ceiling providing easy cleaning and maintenance of the unit exterior. This also helps to greatly reduce the build-up of grease and other contaminates usually associated with the commercial kitchen environment.

Recessed Incandescent Units
• Approved for use in commercial kitchen applications
• Meet with guidelines for DW172 & HSE Guidelines
• Satin finished stainless steel matching faceplates for matching hood interiors
• Tempered prismatic glass diffusers

Fire Suppression System
The island kitchen canopy was fitted with a R102 Ansul fire suppression system which conforms to NFPA standards 17, 17a and 96 and is UL300 listed by Underwriters Laboratories, Inc .

The system was supplied with nozzles, detectors, cartridges, liquid agent, fusible links, pulley tress and elbows as required for the specific commercial kitchen application at Colegrave Primary School, Newham, London.

Case Study - King Edward High School, Edgbaston, Birmingham

Airtherm Engineering Limited has completed a supply and installation of multiple kitchen ventilation hoods at a well-known private School in Edgbaston, Birmingham.

The main island canopy is sized at 9.0m x 3.0m, designed with a slope to feature the existing 1950s glass construction style. We have also supplied and install various other wall mounted stainless steel extract hoods connecting onto the existing ductwork arrangement.

We were given just 4 days to remove the existing hoods and install the new stainless steel kitchen canopies, and remarkably this was achieved by shear hard work from our on-site engineers.

The system ductwork is manufactured and installed to incorporate cleaning and maintenance access doors to fully comply with DW/144  standards.

Health and Safety
All of our canopy systems are manufactured to the strict guidelines of DW/172, British Standards and conform to HSE for kitchen ventilation systems. All canopies and associated components are thoroughly tested to ensure high standards to meet with our clients expectations.

Our lighting units are sealed to industry standards to prevent the ingress of moisture, grease or heat. They meet all necessary hygiene and safety requirements.

Our control panels are designed to meet our clients demands and system features available include gas detection and shut-offs, C0 and C02 detectors and fire suppression systems with a link to the building alarm system.

Working closely with Sandwell MBC, Airtherm Engineering have recently completed the new installation of a kitchen ventilation system, including a complete control solution that features a thyristor, speed regulators and gas interlock.

The existing canopy was made of a metal and glass construction which we removed from site, and a stainless steel wall mounted extraction canopy was designed and installed in it's place, complete with a provision for tempered make-up air.

The project had a very tight schedule, however, our expert installation team ensured the system was fully operational prior to the School kitchen re-opening on Friday 31st August 2012.

Canopy Type:
3- Sided Stainless Steel Extract Unit c/w separate supply air)

Canopy Size:
1No. 3600mmL x 1450mmW x 500mmD

Canopy Lighting:
2off 1200mm Long Fully Recessed Lights

Canopy Construction:
The unit shall be manufactured entirely from 20swg (1.22mm thick), type 304 stainless steel. All visible surfaces shall be ultra-fine grain satin polished to 280 grit, and polythene protected. The Canopy shall be cut punched and folded into sub sections and factory assembled by means of computer controlled seam welds, and non-visible mechanical fixings. All metal edges shall be rolled smooth and be free from any sharp edges or projections. Canopy lower edge shall be formed into a full perimeter condensation channel with inclined internal elevation to simplify cleaning requirements. Purpose of the canopy is to eliminate heat and contaminant from the equipment below. The canopy shall comply with the food safety act 1990, and in accordance with DW172.
