Case Study - Coppice Primary School, Wythall

Airtherm have completed the 1st phase installation of two ‘Wind-iVent’ natural ventilation systems to the newly completed single storey class rooms at The Coppice Primary school. The school is a two form entry school, though larger than the average primary school. The 2nd phase fix features a further six 1.2msq units for the hall area and a further six 1.1msq units serving the classrooms

This new installation of these two natural ventilation systems, through MVS Limited, has been designed and carefully selected from room data sheets provided to ensure an adequate ventilation rate for the occupants.

The natural ventilation systems have been designed in line with all current publications such as CIBSE guidelines, AM10 Natural Ventilation in commercial buildings and Building Bulletin 101. The terminal sizes were calculated using our new computer aided software package ‘Wind-iCalc’ and fully conforms to the CIBSE requirements.

Consultant: Stuart Associates

Client: MVS Limited

Sector: Education

Products: Wind-iVent Systems

Application: Balance Terminals

Product Range
The Airtherm “Wind-iVent” is a natural ventilation system operating on established aerodynamic principles. As external wind  flows around the terminal itself, positive and negative pressure areas are generated. On the positive side air enters the louvres of the terminal and is directed down through the internal vanes into the room below allowing a fresh air supply to be delivered, while on the negative side the stack draws the stale unwanted air which is expelled through the terminal into the atmosphere.

Manufacture

The units are be manufactured in accordance with BS EN ISO 9001 and to suit the architectural and design parameters as indicated in the design specification and drawings. Internal airways are to be protected by incorporating anti-bird mesh to the terminal louvers. Our systems can be manufactured to achieve 99.8% effectiveness (class A) when tested with a simulate rainfall of 75mm/hour and wind speed of 15m/sec based on a free area of 55%.

Installation
Units can be installed on almost every roof type including flat, pitched and even on the roof apex where appropriate. The roof fabric of commercial applications has bearing on the openings and roof plates that are required to install the systems competently. We offer a roof plate solution for all situations, including self mount flashings and curb mount flashings with suitable upstands.

Features and Advantages of Wind-iVent:
  • A fresh air supply for workers - proven to increase productivity & reduce staff sickness
  • Naturally ventilated - reduce your energy costs and carbon footprint without the need for  mechanical ventilation
  • Night time purge of stale air - creating a fresh working environment for staff the following morning
  • Better control of building temperature and CO² levels
  • Free cooling

Heat Recovery Systems Now Available from Airtherm Engineering Ltd

Heat Recovery systems are playing a increasingly important role in modern building design. An effective building ventilation solution has become critical as a result of increased levels of insulation and air tightness in commercial buildings. Factors such as ever increasing energy costs, modern construction methods and building regulations have ultimately led to poor indoor climates that can cause health problems for occupants and damaging long term effects to the fabric of a building.

Our Duplexvent commercial heat recovery units are designed to save your business energy and improve the indoor air quality. These units provide ventilation and heat recovery (for commercial and industrial areas) by using polypropylene exchangers which recover heat from the transfer of warm air to cold air via exchangers with high conductivity and performance.

Benefits of Heat Recovery
  • Saves energy by reducing heating costs
  • Extracts airborne pollutants that can cause allergies and asthma
  • Constantly refreshes the internal atmosphere
  • Removes condensation and humidity
  • Supplies warmed, filtered air to living and working spaces
  • Up to 94% heat recovery
  • SAP Appendix Q eligible models
  • Helps reduce a buildings carbon footprint
  • Meets building regulations, Approved document F, April 2010 (MVHR

Technology
Heat recovery technology works by preheating incoming cool supply air by warming it with the outgoing exhaust air. In this way exhausted air transfers most of its heat to the supply air in a highly efficient heat recovery exchanger before being exhausted (at no time do the airstreams mix).

In Practice
Stale air, contaminated with humidity, toxins and smells is extracted via outlet grilles from the kitchen, bathroom and toilet areas. These outlet grilles allow a constant or demand oriented air flow volume to be extracted.

BREEAM (BRE Environmental Assessment Method) Our heat recovery units help buildings to be assessed for the BREEAM standard (BRE Environmental Assessment Method) - the leading and most widely used environmental assessment method for new buildings.
